Moroccan spending on vacations abroad reached MAD 26.7 billion as of November 2024, new data from the Exchange Office shows.

Spending increased by MAD 4.5 billion ($447,359) compared to the same period the year prior.

The amount reached MAD 22.2 billion last year, the office said, which also monitored the rates during  COVID-19 and improvement post-pandemic.

The spending Moroccans dedicated to traveling abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic reached MAD 10 billion ($994.133 million)  in 2021 and jumped to MAD 17.5 billion ($1.7 billion)  in 2022.

It also jumped from MAD 22.2 billion ($2.2 billion) in 2023 to MAD 26.7 billion ($2.65 billion) in 2024.

SNRT News reported the office is set to issue a new report this month, forecasting a new record-breaking number.

The numbers recorded contradict data announced by a survey in July last year, detailing that 64% of Moroccans did not plan to travel during the summer of 2024.

Conducted by  Moroccan market researcher firm Sunergia, the survey data showed as little as 29% of the respondents traveled or planned to travel.

The study said that 40% of Moroccans who travel during summer vacations spend between MAD 5000 to MAD 8000 ($500 and $800).

About 31% of Moroccans spend MAD 10,000 ($1000 or over), while 29% spend less than $400.

As little as 16% of vacationers spend over MAD 20,000 (approximately $2,000) while 30% spend MAD 5,000.

About 88% of Moroccans who traveled or plan to travel this year prefer to spend their vacation in Morocco, while 15% choose to spend their trips abroad.

According to the survey, many of those who prefer domestic tourism opt to spend their vacation in Tangier, Casablanca, and Marrakech.

Spain, meanwhile, tops the foreign destinations targeted by Moroccans, followed by France, Italy, and Turkiye.

Thousands of Moroccans also spend at least MAD 60,000 ($6,000) to travel to Hajj annually.
