Rabat — The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently shared a fascinating animation showing snowy conditions in several regions across Morocco.
The earth data by NASA shared an image with false-color corrected reflectance technology, known as Banda M11-12-I1, which showed snow in Morocco from December to January 2.
The images, which the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite captured, show the snow appearing cyan.
“Cold air masses from Northern Europe brought the snowy conditions to Morocco, where some mountainous regions experienced 35-4- cm of snow accumulation,” NASA said.
Morocco has been witnessing cold weather recently, with weather alerts forecasting snow.
On Saturday, the weather office in Morocco said that snowfall producing 15 to 30 centimeters is predicted in several Moroccan provinces from Sunday to Monday.
The affected regions include Chefchaouen, Azilal, Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, Sefrou, and Al Hoceima.
Intermittent rainfall from 40 to 60 millimeters will hit the Tangier-Asilah region, as well as other northern cities like Larache, M’diq and Fnideq, Tetouan, Ouezzane, Fahs-Anjra, Chefchaouen and Taounate.
Sidi Kacem and Kenitra are also forecasted to have rainy weather, the office concluded.
The rain and snow come at a critical time for Morocco’s agriculture season, as the country has been grappling with drought for six seasons.
Despite the situation, some reports show a positive turn for the 2024-2025 agricultural season, indicating cautious optimism.
The Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts said that rainfall averaged 50 millimeters from September to December last year. This number is nearly double the number record during the same period last year.
