Rabat – Travel agencies in Morocco have started offering Umrah packages for the months of Shaban and Ramadan, as these are highly popular periods for Moroccans to perform the pilgrimage. However, this year’s prices have increased significantly, which created concerns among potential travelers.
Mohamed Semlali, President of the Moroccan Federation of Travel Agencies, told SNRT News that the cost of performing Umrah has risen by up to 50% compared to previous years.
He explained that the increase affects airfare, accommodation, and other services linked to Umrah. Semlali attributed the rise in costs to several factors, including inflation and economic changes in Saudi Arabia.
According to Semlali, the cheapest economic Umrah packages now start at MAD 30,000 per person, whereas they previously ranged between MAD 14,000 and 20,000. Comprehensive packages, which include premium services, can reach up MAD to 200,000.
Meanwhile, Youssef El Khal, a travel agency manager in Casablanca, told SNRT News that basic packages start at MAD 14,000 but can go as high as MAD 30,000.
In comparison, last year’s packages began at MAD 11,000. Mid-range packages, costing between MAD 20,000 and 180,000, cover airfare, internal transportation, accommodation in Mecca and Medina, and religious guidance.
For many Moroccans, spending part of Ramadan in Saudi Arabia has become a cherished tradition. This price increase has caused concern for some Moroccans, as the rising costs make it more difficult for many to afford the pilgrimage.
While some travelers are willing to pay the higher fees due to the significance of this spiritual journey, others may find themselves unable to take part in the tradition this year.
Umrah, the act of visiting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, is an important religious pilgrimage in Islam.
Unlike Hajj, which is obligatory for Muslims who meet certain criteria, Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year, though it is especially meaningful during the holy months. It involves a series of rituals, including prayer, walking around the Kaaba, and seeking spiritual purification.
