Rabat – President-elect Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire deal has been reached for the war-torn Gaza.
On his platform Truth Social, Trump said: “We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East… They will be released shortly.”
No official statement from negotiators came online about the ongoing talks and a ceasefire agreement.
Al Jazeera, which has been updating readers with the latest news on the Qatari-brokered ceasefire talk, cited sources who confirmed that a potential announcement is likely happening on Thursday.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani reportedly held talks with negotiators from both Hamas and Israel.
Sources told Al Jazeera that the proposed ceasefire agreement will see Qatar and Egypt supervise the return of the displaced from the southern Gaza Strip to the north.
The Israeli army would also withdraw from central Gaza gradually.
The Guardian reported US officials as confirming to the AP that a ceasefire deal has been reached. A Hamas official conveyed the same report to AP, the Guardian said, noting that the ceasefire would be implemented in the coming days.
According to Al Jazeera, an official announcement for the ceasefire is expected on Thursday as the international community is awaiting a finalized confirmation.
Gaza has been under a genocidal war since October 7, 2023, with the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) having killed at least 46,707 people with over 110,265 injuries.
Even as talks were ongoing for a ceasefire, several people lost their lives today during IOF attacks targeting multiple areas in Gaza.
Palestine’s Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa announced today that the agreement for a ceasefire was imminent. He noted, however, that such a deal must lead to the full cessation of the Israeli aggression.
The agreement should also guarantee that the IOF not attack Gaza again.
Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted the minister as saying: “A ceasefire deal must lead to lifting the 17-year siege imposed on Gaza, allowing the entry of aid into all parts of the Strip, unifying the Strip and the West Bank into a single territorial unit, commencing a comprehensive construction of the Strip, and implement the United Nations resolutions on ending the Israeli occupation and realizing the establishment of the Palestinian state.”
