An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the city of Ksar El Kebir in northern Morocco on Monday, February 10.
Nasser Jebour, the head of the National Institute of Geophysics said the tremor was recorded in one of the areas neighboring the Ksar El Kebir region, within the province of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.
He told SNRTnews that the earthquake was felt by residents across different major cities like Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, among other cities like Kenitra, Ouazzane, and Meknes.
No casualties have been reported by local authorities to date.
Videos and posts on social media showed that many people left their homes out of fear.
On September 8, 2023, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Morocco’s Al-Haouz province, inflicting a heavy human toll and causing widespread physical damage.
The earthquake killed at least 3,000 people and left 5,000 others homeless.
Following the earthquake, King Mohammed VI launched a recovery plan with a budget of MAD 120 billion ($11.6 billion) over a period of five years.
The government additionally approved several decrees that seek to enhance earthquake resistance in construction, mainly in areas affected by recent seismic events.
Moroccans also joined the solidarity campaign through making donations and aid to people affected by the deadly quake.
