Rabat — The Syrian National Salvation Front has called on the country’s Interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to sever ties with the Polisario Front.
The opposition group has appreciated Morocco’s position of extending support for al-Sharaa’s presidency.
Earlier this week, King Mohammed VI extended his congratulations to the president for assuming the interim leadership role.
The monarch also reaffirmed his country’s position in support of the Syrian people in achieving their aspirations for freedom, peace, and stability.
Morocco is positioned to stand by Syrian people while they “navigate this critical and decisive phase in their history in complete harmony with our principled stance supporting Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty,” the King declared in the royal message.
In a positive response, the Syrian National Salvation Front said: “We take this good opportunity to renew our deep appreciation to the Sharifian Kingdom of Morocco and its brotherly people,” in a statement, calling on the new Syrian president to “correct all the grave mistakes committed by the defunct regime against the historical relations between Syria and Morocco.”
Notably, they called on the Syrian president to officially recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara and to open a consular office in the city of Laayoune.
Morocco’s Western Sahara position has been gaining momentum in the international community. Dozens of African and Arab countries have opened consulates in Morocco’s southern cities of Dakhla and Laayoune, reflecting their position in favor of Rabat’s territorial integrity.

Over 100 countries support Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible political solution to end the dispute.
“We call on the Syrian leadership to benefit from Moroccan expertise and experiences in rebuilding the institutions and apparatuses of the Syrian state, both civil and military, and to take advantage of the capabilities of the Moroccan private sector in the reconstruction process and the revival of the Syrian economy, ” the statement by the Syrian Front concluded.
In December of last year, confidential data leaked citing that Bashar al-Assad’s regime collaborated with separatist factions, including the Polisario Front.
The document, marked as “highly confidential”, detailed a secret alliance between the Syrian regime and the separatist group claiming independence in southern Morocco.
The confidential document appears to be an official correspondence from the Syrian government dating back to January 2012 about currency exchange rates in Morocco.
According to the correspondence, Polisario members sent militias to undergo military training with the Syrian Arab army.
Considering the troubled past with Assad’s Polisario ties, this new statement by the Syrian Front comes as a warm welcome, signaling a positive future for Morocco-Syria bilateral relations.
