Rabat – Sweden witnessed on Tuesday the deadliest shooting in its history after a gunman killed at least 10 people at an adult education center west of Stockholm.
Swedish officials warned that the death toll could rise. Head of local police, Roberto Eid Forest, told reporters that the gunman also died at the scene, but the circumstances leading to that are unclear.
The education center, called Campus Risbergska offers educational classes for adults as well as language classes for migrants and vocational training for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Police are yet to reveal the identities of those killed and whether they were students or teachers.
Speaking at a press conference following the shooting, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the deadly incident as the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history.”
He condemned the “brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” and noted that although the motives behind the attack remain unclear, an investigation is underway to uncover all circumstances of the case.
Police believe the perpetrator acted alone and that the attack does not appear to have a terror motive.
Swedish outlet The Local said that the perpetrator is a 35-year-old man with a hunting license, adding that he does not have a criminal record and had no connection to any criminal gang.
Speaking to Aftonbladet tabloid, the perpetrator’s relatives described him as a “loner” who kept to himself and did not have much contact with family and friends. “He doesn’t seem to like people,” one of his relatives told Aftonbladet.
