Morocco Helps Spain in Major Drug Bust

Rabat – Morocco contributed to a major drug bust the Spanish police carried out on Thursday.

Spain’s Civil Guard said that they seized over two tons of cannabis thanks to “precise intelligence” from Morocco’s General Directorate of Surveillance (DGST).

The operation took place on the northern coast of Tenerife Island in the Canary Islands.

Spanish security services raided the area after DGST alerted them about the potential arrival of a boat carrying a large quantity of cannabis.

The operation enabled Spain to seize 53 bundles of drugs, while six suspects were arrested.

Police said they have put all the suspects in custody and opened an investigation to shed further light on the case.

Morocco frequently operates with its international partners, with the aim of boosting regional security.

In addition to drugs, Morocco’s intelligence assists partners with arresting highly prolific criminals, including those involved in terrorism plots.

The latest joint counterterrorism took place earlier this month, when Spanish police arrested three suspects in Toledo on suspicion of terrorism thanks to Morocco’s intelligence.

Last week, Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said Spain and Morocco reached an “exceptional and extraordinary” level of bilateral ties.

“Both countries are very conscious that the security of our citizens guides us at all times,” Grande-Marlaska said, adding that Morocco and Spain are “friends” and “brother countries.”

Meanwhile,  Spanish General Commissioner for Information Javier Antonio Susin  Bercero commended last month the high level of cooperation between the two countries. He noted in particular that Spain has multiple times foiled dangerous terrorist attacks thanks to reliable intelligence from Morocco’s DGST.
