Marrakech – As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Morocco will implement a continuous work schedule from 9 AM to 3 PM for public administrations, institutions, and local authorities, the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform announced today.
Necessary accommodations would be provided for employees to perform the Friday prayer, it added.
While the country maintains GMT+1 throughout the year for energy efficiency and economic alignment with European partners, this annual change aims to ease daily routines during the fasting period.
Government studies have shown that maintaining GMT+1 year-round has led to a 37.6-gigawatt-hour reduction in electricity consumption and a decrease in carbon emissions by 11,444 tons.
However, the practice has sparked ongoing public debate. Some health experts have notably highlighted its effects on sleep patterns and overall well-being, especially among children.
The return to GMT during Ramadan is expected to provide some relief for citizens, making fasting hours more manageable and aligning daily schedules more closely with natural daylight hours.
