Rabat – The UK has appointed Alex Pinfield as its next ambassador to Morocco.
He will take over from Simon Martin and assume office in August 2025, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) announced.
With more than two decades of diplomatic experience, Pinfield has built a career shaped by high-level positions in foreign policy. Since joining the FCDO in 1999, he has served in senior positions in areas of primary geopolitical interest.
From 2017-2020, he led the China department and subsequently from 2021-2022 oversaw Afghan policy. From 2022-2024, he oversaw the Iran desk, a role that demands thorough understanding of regional maneuvering.
His field experience spans several continents. He served as deputy ambassador in Kabul in 2021, navigating a critical period in Afghanistan’s recent history.
Before that, he led the foreign policy section at the British High Commission in Canberra from 2009 to 2013.
His tenure as chief of the political section in Tehran (2007–2009) and his earlier assignment as second secretary in Beijing (2002–2005) provided him with firsthand experience of intricate diplomatic situations.
Apart from his diplomatic assignments, Pinfield held strategic roles in the UK government.
He worked in national security operations as deputy director at the National Security Secretariat in 2016. Additionally, he previously analyzed Middle Eastern affairs at the Cabinet Office between 2005 and 2006.
His appointment is a testament to the UK’s commitment to its relationship with Morocco.
As he prepares to take up his new role, his extensive years of experience in foreign policy and diplomacy position him well to benefit from the historic relationship between the two countries.
