Rabat – Security officers and customs officials at Tangier Med Port foiled a smuggling attempt involving 1,852 fireworks and explosive devices on Friday.
A 42-year-old man was arrested for transporting dangerous materials that could pose a threat to people and property.
According to a security source, the suspect was detained upon arrival on a ferry from a European port. Authorities searched his utility vehicle and discovered 36 boxes containing the illegal items.
Authorities have placed the suspects under investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office. The investigation aims to uncover the full details of the case and identify any possible connections to criminal networks.
Fireworks and explosive devices are often used in celebrations, protests, or even violent acts, which is why strict regulations exist for their import and use.
These items, which contain explosive chemicals, pose serious dangers such as fire hazards and risk of injury.
Fireworks and firecrackers are widely used during Achoura in Morocco. During the celebration, which has both religious and cultural significance, children and teenagers often set off fireworks, firecrackers, and flares in streets and neighborhoods.
Authorities warn about accidents, fires, and injuries during this period. Every year, authorities report injuries caused by unsafe firework use during Achoura, especially among children.
These injuries include burns, eye injuries, and hand wounds. Security forces often crack down on smuggling and street sales before Achoura to prevent accidents.
