Rabat – Religious authorities in Morocco are set to observe the crescent moon for the holy month of Ramadan on Friday.
The country’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs asked its religious committees to gear up to see the moon for Ramadan on February 28.
If the moon is visible then, Saturday will be the first day of Ramadan. If not, the holy month will start on March 2 instead.
According to early astronomical predictions, Morocco will start observing Ramadan 2025 on Sunday, March 2.
Astronomer Ibrahim Akhiam has notably predicted that the crescent moon will not be visible on Friday.
“The sighting of the Ramadan crescent will be extremely difficult in Morocco on the night of 29 Sha’ban 1446 Hijri, which corresponds to 2025,” he told Morocco World News.
According to other astronomy projections, Saudi Arabia and most other Arab countries will begin fasting on March 1.
Ramadan is a special celebration in Morocco and across the Muslim world.
Beyond the culinary indulgence, Ramadan marks an increase in religious devotion.
During evenings, Moroccans flock to mosques to perform Taraweeh prayers; charity also increases during the holy month.
