Rabat — Morocco is not only hosting the U17 AFCON, but is also opening the competition tonight in a match against Uganda.
The game will take place today at 10 p.m. local time, and AFCON, as well as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) recognize that Morocco has sights set high, aiming to win the competition on home soil.
“In their debut tournament as hosts in 2013, Morocco finished fourth. In their next appearance in 2019, they were eliminated in the group stages,” CAF said, recalling that the Atlas Lions ended as runners-up at the last edition in Algeria in 2023.
Morocco lost to Senegal in the final, but there is a consensus that the North African country played best during the finals.
Nabil Baha, Morocco’s coach, called up 26 players for the competition, which is taking place from March 30 to April 19.
The Atlas Cubs’ coach is determined that he has a team full of quality players.
“Playing on home soil and in front of our supporters is a great advantage,” Baha said during a press conference this week.
“I am confident, and the players are highly motivated. This trophy is staying here,” the coach said.
For fans seeking to watch the match, the go-to channel is Arriyadia, which will stream it live.
