Rabat – King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to 1,533 individuals convicted by different courts across Morocco on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr.
The pardon includes both individuals who are currently in prison and others who are on bail.
A statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Justice said on Sunday evening that the beneficiaries of the royal pardon include 1,203 who are in detention.
Of these, 20 detainees received a full pardon of their remaining prison sentence.
The others were granted a reduction of their prison sentences. Five detainees who were sentenced to life now are granted a fixed-term sentence.
Beneficiaries of the royal pardon who are at liberty include 299 individuals, including 54 individuals who were granted a pardon of the prison sentence or its remaining term.
Sixteen individuals were granted a pardon of the prison sentence while maintaining the fine, while 216 others were excepted from paying the fine.
Twelve prisoners were granted a pardon of both the prison sentence and the fine.
According to the Justice Ministry, the pardon was also extended to those convicted in cases related to extremism and terrorism after they officially expressed their commitment to the country’s values.
Their number totals 31.
Royal pardon is customary in Morocco, marking national and religious holidays.
