Noussair Mazraoui was forced to leave Old Trafford at half-time due to an urgent family matter.
The Moroccan international had started brightly in the quarter-final thrilling game against Lyon, but his 49th appearance of the season was cut short, and he did not return for the second half. He was then replaced by Luke Shaw.
United were leading 2-0 at the time, only to concede two goals in the second half. When the game went into extra time, Lyon surprised the hosts with two goals just before the Red Devils turned the tide 4-2 in extra time and produced a sensational late comeback to win 5-4.
Mazraoui, a regular fixture under Ruben Amorim, was making his fifth consecutive Europa League start. United remain unbeaten in the competition this season, with Mazraoui playing a pivotal role on the right side of the three-man defensive line.
While the reason for his early departure remains private, football journalist Chris Wheeler confirmed the matter was unrelated to teammate Victor Lindelof, who also left the stadium at the interval due to a separate issue.
Lindelof, meanwhile, has also enjoyed regular minutes under Amorim lately, featuring in five of United’s last six Premier League matches and making three starts, including in the 4-1 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.
The Sweden international is set to depart Old Trafford in June when his contract expires, alongside veterans Christian Eriksen, Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans.
