Rabat – OCP Green Water, a company under Morocco’s OCP Group, has secured MAD 6 billion ($620 million) in financing to expand its desalination projects.
The funding was provided by the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG), one of Morocco’s major public financial institutions, and structured by its investment arm, CDG Capital.
This major investment supports OCP Group’s green strategy and goals to improve water use in its operations, said the fertilizer giant in a press release today.
By 2030, OCP Green Water aims to produce 630 million cubic meters of desalinated water every year. This will meet all of OCP Group’s non-conventional water needs and help supply nearby cities and farms.
The financing comes at a crucial time, said the statement, noting the increasing water challenges Morocco is facing. It added that with this deal, the company can strengthen its water independence and contribute to the country’s overall water resilience.
“This financing marks a key milestone in our sustainable water strategy,” said Ahmed Znibar, CEO of OCP Green Water.
Zanzibar added that it reinforces OCP Green Water and CDG’s shared commitment to take ‘concrete steps toward strengthening Morocco’s water resilience.”
CDG Capital also spoke about the importance of the project for the country. “This operation is fully aligned with the strategy of CDG Group, which aims to support its institutional partners in mobilizing financing for the development of strategic projects for the country,” said Mehdi Bouriss, CEO of CDG Capital.
He specifically mentioned projects focused on securing the water supply and promoting the responsible management of resources.
OCP Green Water focuses on non-traditional water sources like desalination and wastewater reuse. These efforts are part of a larger plan by OCP Group to rely only on non-conventional water and clean energy.
Since early 2025, OCP has already reached full autonomy in water use, and aims to reach 100% clean energy by 2027 and carbon neutrality by 2040.
Morocco is currently experiencing a severe water crisis, which was exacerbated by prolonged droughts. The country has experienced six consecutive years of drought, leading to a significant decline in dam water reserves.
To address this crisis, the country is investing in desalination technology, as well as implementing several measures to tackle the issues of water mismanagement.
