Rabat – Moroccan police and customs officers at Tanger Med Port foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 11,000 fireworks and flares on Wednesday evening.
A 31-year-old French citizen of Moroccan origin was arrested in connection with the case.
Security forces stopped the suspect shortly after arriving on a ferry from a European port. During a search of the utility vehicle he was driving, officers found a total of 11,165 fireworks and flares.
These items are considered dangerous as they are highly flammable and can pose serious risks to people and property, police said in a statement.
Authorities have launched a judicial investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor. The aim is to uncover all details and motives behind the case, and to determine whether there are other people involved in this illegal activity.
Fireworks and explosive devices are often used in celebrations, protests, or even violent acts, which is why strict regulations exist for their import and use.
These items, which contain explosive chemicals, pose serious dangers such as fire hazards and risk of injury.
Fireworks and firecrackers are widely used during Achoura in Morocco. During the celebration, children and teenagers often set off fireworks, firecrackers, and flares in streets and neighborhoods.
Authorities warn about accidents, fires, and injuries during this period. Every year, authorities report injuries caused by unsafe firework use during Achoura, especially among children.
These injuries include burns, eye injuries, and hand wounds. Security forces often crack down on smuggling and street sales before Achoura to prevent accidents.
