Gaza Genocide: Western Countries Threaten Sanctions on Israel

The move, which political analysts argue is too little to late, comes following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of a plan to “take full control over all of Gaza.”

Rabat —  Israeli genocidal war crimes on Gaza are receiving more international outcry, but in an unprecedented move, it is now coming from the country’s close allies.

The UK, France, and Canada warned on Monday that they will take action against Israel, saying, “We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions,” if it doesn’t stop its genocidal assaults on the war-torn enclave.

The move comes following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of a plan to “take full control over all of Gaza.”

The three countries issued a joint statement “calling on the Israeli Government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.”

Through the statement, the Western countries expressed opposition to “any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank.”

The joint statement also described the settlements’ expansion as “illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians.”

The UK government lamented Israel’s “denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population,” describing it as “unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law.”

For his part, the French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed “firm opposition” to Israel’s expansion plans on Gaza, saying the situation in the enclave is extremely “intolerable.”

In a post on X, Macron said that during the upcoming June 18 conference (on Palestinian statehood) in New York, participants must “work toward implementing the two-state solution.”

In their expressed despair at Gaza’s destruction, the statement also condemned the “abhorrent language” used by the Israeli government, which is currently finalizing plans for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza’s population.

“Permanent forced displacement is a breach of international humanitarian law.”

Hamas welcomed the joint action of the three countries, saying it is “an important step” towards restoring peace and security in the region, as well as reviving the principles of international law.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to X, claiming that Israel will continue to defend itself “until total victory is achieved.”

He argued that three countries are “asking Israel to end a defensive war for survival,” alleging it is against “Hamas terrorists on our border.”

Netanyahu personally got upset about the European leaders’ statement, alleging the three “are offering a huge prize” to Hamas.

Too little too late

Political analysts and international NGO believe that this step is too late, given the number of innocent civilians murdered at the hands of the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).

While Palestinian Ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot welcomed the joint statement, he said that the move should have been taken already, considering the genocide that has been happening for 19 months. He urged that taking action is the only way to deter Israel.

“Israel has proven time and again it will listen to neither promptings nor demands,” the ambassador posted on Instagram’s Threads as saying, adding that “it will heed only action.”

He outlined that these actions include “a full arms embargo, sanctions, as well as accountability for war crimes, and an immediate recognition of the state of Palestine.”

The IOF’s genocidal attacks against Gaza’s civilians have killed over 53,000 Palestinians, with the number expected to be higher as many bodies remain trapped under the rubble.
