Rabat — Residents of Dakhla experienced a brief moment of alarm on Friday afternoon when powerful explosions echoed throughout the city and its surrounding areas.
The loud blasts sparked concern and questions among locals before authorities later explained the cause.
Local media sources reported that the explosions came from a routine controlled demolition operation.
Military forces destroyed old, unusable bombs and landmines in the Argoub area, located approximately 80 kilometers from Dakhla. Officials conducted this operation as part of standard safety procedures to protect residents.
The sources confirmed that the situation remained completely safe throughout the process. The Royal Armed Forces and Royal Gendarmerie directly supervised the operation, which followed the highest safety standards.
Reports also indicated that elements from the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) also monitored the destruction of these war remnants. All necessary precautionary measures were taken during the procedure.
Officials explained that these actions form part of an ongoing plan to secure the region and eliminate any old materials or equipment that could pose future risks. They pointed out their commitment to informing citizens about such operations to prevent panic or confusion.
