Rabat — King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to 591 people to mark Morocco’s Youth Day celebration this year, which coincides with his 62nd birthday.
The Ministry of Justice announced the decision, which affects both imprisoned individuals and those living freely after their court sentences.
The pardon covers people sentenced by various courts across Morocco. Of the 591 people who received pardons, 445 remain in prison while 146 live freely in their communities.
Prisoners receive relief
Among the 445 imprisoned individuals, most received sentence reductions rather than complete pardons.
The pardon reduced prison sentences for 441 inmates and granted full pardons to three others.
One prisoner serving a life sentence received a commutation to a fixed-term prison sentence, giving them hope for eventual release.
Free citizens benefit too
The royal pardon also reached 146 people who no longer serve time in prison but still face legal consequences from their convictions.
The King forgave financial penalties for 91 of these individuals, removing the burden of outstanding fines.
Eight people received pardons from both prison sentences and financial penalties, while another eight had their prison sentences forgiven but must still pay their fines.
The remaining 39 people received pardons from prison sentences they had not yet completed or still owed.
Morocco’s Youth Day falls on August 21 each year, celebrating the country’s young people and their contributions to society.
The King regularly marks important national holidays by granting pardons to prisoners and others affected by the justice system.
