Rabat – Moroccan customs, in collaboration with national police, stopped an attempt to smuggle 60 kilograms of hashish at the Bab Sebta border crossing on Tuesday morning.Â
The drugs were intended to be transported out of Morocco, SNRT News reported.
Authorities found the hashish carefully hidden in secret compartments in the front and rear wings of a car, as well as under the back seats.
The driver, a Moroccan citizen driving a car with Spanish license plates, was arrested and handed over to the Provincial Judicial Police in Tetouan for further investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor.Â
Authorities seized the car, and the drugs were transferred to the customs warehouse as evidence.
Bab Sebta (Ceuta’s Gate) is located in northern Morocco near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. It is a notorious hot spot for drug trafficking and smuggling of illegal contraband. The operation is part of ongoing efforts by Moroccan authorities to fight drug trafficking and international smuggling networks.
Just last month, police in Sidi Ifni thwarted an international drug smuggling attempt, confiscating nearly 2,000 tons of hashish.Â
The boat carrying the drugs was also carrying seven people attempting to cross to Spain, and the illegal migration attempt was stopped.
Also last month, Spanish authorities arrested two Moroccan nationals in Malaga after uncovering a major drug trafficking operation involving 1,579 kilograms of hashish hidden inside fake oranges.Â
The suspects were intercepted following suspicious driving on the A-7 highway, leading police to inspect a truck carrying pallets of oranges.Â
Some fruits appeared unusual, and a closer check revealed they were hollowed out and filled with hashish.
