Rabat – A United Nations investigation has concluded that Israel’s war on Gaza amounts to genocide, marking a historic and highly significant finding after nearly two years of relentless assault on Palestinians.
Navi Pillay, chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, shared the results with Al Jazeera on Tuesday. She said Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant are among those responsible.
“We’ve identified the president, the prime minister and the former minister of defence based on their statements and the orders that they’ve given,” Pillay said.
She explained that because these leaders acted as agents of the state, Israel as a whole bears responsibility. “So we say it’s [the] state of Israel that has committed genocide,” she added.
The commission’s report said there was strong evidence of genocidal intent, pointing to both the public statements of Israeli officials and the actions of Israeli forces. “The Commission concludes that the Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces have the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” the report stated.
Israel quickly rejected the findings. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the inquiry as “fake” in a post on X, accusing its authors of acting as “Hamas proxies.” The ministry added: “Israel categorically rejects this distorted and false report and calls for the immediate abolition of this Commission of Inquiry.”
Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Daniel Meron, also dismissed the report, calling it “scandalous,” “fake,” and a “libellous rant.”
The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have long been accused of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza due to their targeted attacks on civilians, including aid seekers, starvation, and forced displacement, in addition to the months-long siege that deprived the vulnerable population of basic necessities.
