Rabat – Locally heavy thundershowers with gusts of wind are expected this Wednesday in several Moroccan provinces, announced the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM).
The thundershowers will produce 20 to 30 millimeters of rainfall from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today in several provinces, including those affected by the Al Haouz earthquake in 2023, including Taroudant.
In addition to Al Haouz and Taroudant, the same weather will affect Midelt, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Rehamna, and Chichaoua.
Many activists have urged the government to speed up the rehabilitation process for Al Haouz residents, who lost their homes due to the earthquake in 2023.
Earlier this month, Moroccan news agency MAP shared a series of official statistics regarding the reconstruction projects in the aftermath of the earthquake.
According to MAP, the reconstruction operation in the provinces affected by the earthquake is “progressing at a steady pace.” The data said that the projects launched in key areas reached a completion rate exceeding 90% in certain areas.
In Al Haouz province, where the damage was most severe, the report cited that reconstruction of housing has reached a progress rate of 91.33% with nearly 24,000 homes already rebuilt or rehabilitated.
However, Rabat witnessed a protest on September 8 that brought together dozens of residents from Al Haouz who demonstrated against housing delays and exclusions.
The demonstration commemorated the second anniversary of the devastating earthquake that killed 3,000 and left 5,000 others injured.
During the protest, Houssine El Messhat, a member of the Civil Coalition for the Mountain, called on the government to speak the truth.
In a statement to Morocco World News (MWN), El Messhat said: “We were hoping that after two years we would celebrate the end of the victims’ suffering, but the truth is that the struggle is still going on.”
