Heavy Thunderstorms to Hit Several Provinces in Morocco

Rabat – A new weather alert forecasts heavy thunderstorms that are set to hit several provinces across Morocco.

A statement from the General Directorate of Meteorology forecasts rainfall between 20 and 30 milliliters to hit the provinces of Jerada, Figuig, and Boulemane from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. today.

The same weather will affect Midelt, Ouarzazate, and Azilal.

Moroccan regions today are experiencing a noticeable drop in temperatures, with weather conditions ranging between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius. It comes just a few days after several regions, including Rabat, recorded highs of over 30 and 34 degrees.

The hot temperatures significantly worsened challenges like the ongoing drought and prolonged dry seasons. 

Recently, however, reports suggested that brief spells of rainfall earlier this month offered a slight relief.

Last week, the Ministry of Equipment said heavy rainfall that occurred earlier this month brought relief to Morocco’s dams.

The latest figures from the ministry said that the recent rainfall helped raise filling levels in reservoirs like the Bin El Ouidane dam in Azilal. The reserves in the dam rose by 5.47 million cubic meters, pushing its filling rate to 11.6%.

The Al Massira dam in the Settat province witnessed an increase of 4.25 million cubic meters, bringing the filling level to only 2.92%.

The Kadoussa dam in Errachidia reached a filling rate of 16.4% while the Hassan Dakhil dam rose by 1. Million cubic meters stands at 58.2%
