Rabat – The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has launched an internal investigation after a video shared on social media showed two police officers in uniform involved in illegal actions.
DGSN is believed to be responding to a viral video showing two police officers violently beating a young man. The footage shows two uniformed officers repeatedly hitting a young man with batons while he was lying on the ground, begging them to stop.
The video quickly spread online, with many Moroccans expressing anger over what they described as excessive use of force.
DGSN said it has taken the incident “very seriously” and instructed the General Inspectorate to open a thorough investigation. The purpose, according to the statement, is to verify the authenticity of the video, determine any professional or legal violations, and take disciplinary or legal action against those responsible if wrongdoing is confirmed.
The DGSN reaffirmed its firm commitment to strictly enforcing the law against any police officer found guilty of illegal actions.
This comes amid the ongoing GenZ212 protests, led mostly by young Moroccans, that have swept across several cities for more than a week. Demonstrators have been calling for better healthcare, improved education, and greater social justice.
However, the police response to the protests has been widely criticized. Human rights advocates and social media users have accused authorities of using excessive force and carrying out mass arrests to disperse peaceful gatherings.
The viral video has added more fuel to public anger around general police crackdowns, with many saying how similar heavy-handed tactics are used to silence young people demanding change.
