Rabat — Google continues to use a divided map of Morocco, excluding its southern provinces from the North African country.

Many news outlets in Morocco have alleged that Google Maps has updated their maps, adopting the full map of Morocco, including its southern provinces.

However, a quick check using a VPN confirms the map remains unchanged for Google users outside Morocco, challenging Rabat’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.

The rumors followed the UN’s historic adoption of Resolution 2797, endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

The local outlets claimed that Google’s adoption of the full map aligns with the newly adopted resolution, although it has since been proven false.

Official websites of many organizations and those representing countries have updated their maps of Morocco over the years.

This reflects the growing momentum Morocco’s Western Sahara dossier has gained throughout the years.

Enaire, a Spanish public company responsible for managing air navigation in Spain, published a complete map of Morocco in 2024.

Spain officially endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible basis for resolving the dispute in 2022.

For the part of the US, the CIA adopted the undivided map of Morocco, including its southern provinces in Western Sahara, in 2021.

Additionally, since then, the US State Department has also been using an integral map of Morocco that includes its southern provinces.

The map is also featured on Travel.State.Gov.

The US recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara in December 2020. France joined the list of countries that recognize Morocco’s sovereignty in 2024.

The publication of Morocco’s full map has drawn strong reactions from Polisario and its advocates worldwide.

A historic turning point

Following the vote on Resolution 2797, King Mohammed VI thanked all allies that contributed to Morocco’s Western Sahara momentum.

He also emphasized that Morocco will update and detail its Autonomy Plan and submit it to the UN to serve as the sole basis for negotiation.

“Furthermore, recognition of the Kingdom’s economic sovereignty over the southern provinces has increased significantly, following the decisions made by major economic powers, such as the United States, France, Britain, Russia, Spain, and the European Union, to encourage investment and trade with these provinces,” King Mohammed VI said in speech on Friday.

He particularly thanked US President Donald Trump for his efforts to pave the way for a final settlement of the conflict, as well as extending his thanks to allies like Spain, the US, and France for their efforts to ensure the success of the peaceful process.

“My sincere thanks also go to all the Arab and African sister nations that have consistently expressed their unwavering and unconditional support for the Moroccan Sahara. I also thank all countries around the world that back the Autonomy Initiative,” the monarch said.
