Rabat – Azzedine Ounahi once again proved himself on the big stage as Girona held La Liga giants Real Madrid to a 1–1 draw at Montilivi. The Moroccan midfielder lit up the match with a stunning long-range goal just before halftime, a goal that earned him the well-deserved Man of the Match and spurred the home crowd.
The timing and execution was perfect — a low, powerful shot that left Thibaut Courtois with no chance and gave Girona the shock lead against one of the Europe giants.
But Ounahi’s impact went far beyond the goal. From the first whistle he dictated the pace in midfield, linking defense and attack with composure and vision. His pressing and positioning disrupted Real Madrid’s usual flow and forced them into mistakes and limited their chances. Girona’s defensive shape and Ounahi’s energy allowed them to absorb the pressure without conceding more.

Even after Real Madrid equalized through a second-half penalty by Kylian Mbappé, Ounahi was a constant threat on transitions, driving Girona forward whenever the ball changed hands. His tactical awareness showed his growing maturity and leadership on the pitch. For Girona, a club struggling in La Liga, having a player who can do this against top opposition is a big boost in confidence and morale.
The timing of this performance is even more important for Morocco as the Africa Cup of Nations is just three weeks away. Ounahi is showing he’s in top form ahead of the tournament. His ability to shine against European top teams is a good omen for Morocco’s AFCON ambitions and gives the team a key player who can make a difference in big games.
