Rabat – Morocco’s Exchange Office has announced new measures allowing currency exchange operators to process foreign exchange operations using international bank cards.

The Exchange Office said in a circular that the decision aims to strengthen the operational framework for foreign exchange transactions, supporting the transition to modern, secure payment solutions.

Under the new circular, currency exchange offices that the Exchange Office authorizes are permitted to use electronic payment terminals to carry out foreign currency purchase operations via international bank cards, in exchange for dirhams.

“They also have the possibility of providing their clients with payment cards loaded in dirhams during foreign currency purchase operations,” the statement said, describing the new measures as part of the office’s commitment to supporting services improvement.

The office also said such measures are in line with compliance and with rules relating to the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, emphasizing the importance of relying on third parties that apply the same due diligence rules.

The new measures come as Morocco is hosting prestigious events, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on December 21.

The new exchange facilities could be beneficial for tourists and delegations, who will now be able to exchange currency quickly using their international bank cards.
