Tanzania Team News
The Taifa Stars have not had the start to their AFCON campaign they wished for. With an opening 2-1 loss to Nigeria and a 1-1 draw against Uganda, Miguel Gamondi’s men find themselves third in the Group C standings.
To progress to the knockout stages, Tanzania must win today. A draw, giving the Taifa Stars a tally of only two points, would not be enough for Gamondi’s team to qualify among the best third-placed teams.
In the pre-match press conference, the Argentinian manager stressed the importance of today’s match, saying that his group’s togetherness is unaffected by the recent poor performances.
“We play a big team who don’t need a presentation, but we are ready to give a fight,” Gamondi said. “We have a bunch of players who believe in what we are doing and try to represent the country well. It’s our last opportunity.”
The tactician stressed the importance of limiting Tunisia’s wide threats, tracking second-line runs, and winning the second balls.
Tunisia Team News
Matchday two saw the Eagles of Carthage nearly mount an improbable comeback against Nigeria.
Down 3-0 after 70 minutes of play, Tunisia got on the scoreboard thanks to center-back Montassar Talbi, completely changing the flow of the match. With momentum on their side, the Tunisians dominated the rest of the match, adding a second goal in the 87th minute, and falling just short of equalizing in injury time, with Ferjani Sassi’s header going just inches wide of the Super Eagles’ goal.
Currently sitting in second place in Group C, Sami Trabelsi’s side only needs a draw to officialize their qualification to the Round of 16.
The Tunisian tactician stressed the importance of putting the Nigeria defeat behind, and turning all attention to today’s match.
“After the Nigeria match, we met with all the players and emphasized the need to turn the page,” Trabelsi said. “We need to mentally focus on preparing for Tanzania.”
