Rabat – Mistral AI, a French company focused on generative artificial intelligence, has announced a partnership with Morocco to develop advanced language models that can communicate in Moroccan Darija and Amazigh language (Tamazight).
Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral AI, made the announcement during the launch event of Morocco’s AI strategy, which took place in Rabat on Monday. He told SNRTnews that the new models will be able to generate texts and conversations and power chatbots designed to meet the needs of local users.
Mensch explained that these language models will gradually evolve to include voice-based systems to allow users to interact with them naturally through smartphones.
Founded in 2023, Mistral specializes in advanced language models capable of producing text, conversations, and audio content. The company uses deep learning and neural networks to create effective tools for businesses and institutions worldwide.
As part of its expansion in Morocco, Mistral AI is studying the possibility of setting up local teams in Casablanca and Rabat. Mensch said teams will be tasked to work directly with local research groups, in line with the company’s commitment to developing Moroccan skills and localizing advanced technology.
This partnership comes as Morocco accelerates its efforts to build homegrown artificial intelligence programs. Amal El Fallah, Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, announced the launch of a series of AI programs that are “100% Moroccan.”
In a statement to SNRTnews, the minister said the initiative honors the scientific legacy of the Arab and Muslim engineer Abu Al-Izz ibn Ismail Al Jazari, one of the pioneers of early mechanical engineering and robotics.
The upcoming programs will be based on a network of learning institutes linked to the Jazari Institute, which will be headquartered in Rabat. The goal is to distribute AI education and knowledge across all Moroccan cities.
At the event, Morocco signed several agreements and partnerships in the field of artificial intelligence. These agreements aim to create an integrated national ecosystem that connects scientific research, technological innovation, and the operational needs of the state and local authorities, while reinforcing digital sovereignty and positioning Morocco as a regional and African hub for artificial intelligence.
