Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has firmly denied information circulating on social media claiming that a person died after being assaulted during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Rabat.

Some social media accounts alleged that a security guard working at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat died after being attacked by a Senegalese fan during the final match. However, the DGSN said these claims are completely untrue.

The national security authority confirmed that no death was recorded among security staff or ball boys. It also stated that police services did not carry out any procedures related to a death caused by violence or sports-related unrest.

The DGSN added that these facts were verified after checking with different health institutions.

While rejecting what it described as false and misleading information, the national security services said they have informed the relevant judicial authorities about the content of these posts. They have requested instructions to open judicial investigations to identify those involved in spreading the false claims and to take legal action where necessary.

Several Moroccan social media reports said that a Moroccan security guard who was assaulted by Senegalese fans, and suffered a severe jaw injury, has passed away last night after being in the ICU. Some reports said the man in question was a volunteer.

After violence erupted during the AFCON final, videos show Senegalese fans attacking staff and security at the stadium and hitting them with chairs. One stadium staff was seen evacuated after being hit in the jaw. There have been no updates about his condition.

The chaos that took place at the game, particularly after VAR awarded Morocco a penalty kick in the last minutes of the original time, marred the AFCON 2025 final. As subsequent reports reveal details about the unruly and violent incidents, CAF has opened an investigation into what unfolded, including the Senegalese coach’s and his team’s decision to leave the pitch during the game.

In addition, Morocco football federation announced they will take legal action over Senegal’s withdrawal from the pitch.
