Rabat – The public prosecutor’s office in Tangier has opened a judicial investigation into the circulation of fake videos on social media appearing to show that flooding caused massive damage in the city of Ksar El Kebir.
Authorities said videos shared online are misleading and do not reflect the real situation on the ground. Initial findings showed that the clips were created using artificial intelligence tools and were designed to spread false information and mislead public opinion.
The prosecutor’s office said the investigation is part of broader efforts to combat fake news, especially during emergency situations, when false information can cause panic and disrupt public order.
Authorities stressed the importance of relying on verified and official sources for information, particularly during periods of severe weather and natural disasters.
Meanwhile, public authorities in Ksar El Kebir continue to mobilize all available human and material resources to manage the rising water levels of the Loukkos River. Heavy rainfall over the past several days caused water levels to increase, leading to flooding in some low-lying neighborhoods.
Local authorities in Larache have also deployed intervention teams and equipment belonging to local administrations, municipalities, the Loukkos River Basin Agency, the regional multi-service company, and the regional directorate of equipment and transport.
Ksar El Kebir has experienced significant flooding, heavy rain, and rising river levels. Videos shared online by residents show streets covered in water, cars partially submerged, and water reaching waist level in some areas.
Authorities have urged residents to leave ground floors, move to higher levels, and follow safety instructions.
Temporary shelters have been prepared to receive families forced to leave their homes, including tents equipped with basic supplies and heating to deal with falling temperatures.
In addition, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) deployed units in affected areas to support locals after instructions from King Mohammed VI.
