Rabat – After a relatively calm and sunny weekend, stormy weather returned on Monday to several cities and provinces in northern Morocco, particularly in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.
Heavy rain and strong winds affected areas including Tangier, Tetouan, M’diq, Chefchaouen, Martil, and Ouezzane, raising fears among residents following recent flooding in Ksar El Kebir.
Videos shared online show intense rainfall, strong winds, and very low visibility in Tangier, making driving difficult and increasing public concern. Some residents said they were afraid, especially as water levels rose quickly in several areas.
Following official warnings about the continuation of the storm, local authorities have reportedly heightened monitoring of dam water levels, and temporarily closed roads in high-risk areas as they continue to coordinate between all emergency and local services.
Locals reported said that the regional vigilance committee intervened on the road linking Tetouan and Chefchaouen, where traffic was temporarily suspended at Oued Siflaou before later reopening.
Traffic was also temporarily stopped on the Oued Laou road, while several flood-prone sections of the road between M’diq and Fnideq were closed as a precaution.
Meanwhile in Tetouan, rising water levels turned several roundabouts into water-filled areas, amid growing concern over a possible overflow of the Martil River.
Authorities in Chefchaouen intervened on several rural roads to remove mud and debris caused by landslides that had blocked traffic. Similar interventions took place in urban areas, in coordination with local municipalities equipped with heavy machinery to restore access and prevent isolation.
Local authorities, including the Royal Gendarmerie, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, local councils, and delegated service companies, are on high alert as the stormy weather continues to worsen. In addition, classes were suspended in some areas as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students.
