Rabat – Authorities in the Tangier-Tetouan Al Hoceima have categorically denied claims alleging that they are conducting a census of residents from the flood-hit city, Ksar El Kebir.
In an official statement, the Wilaya of the region described the allegations as “entirely unfounded.” Such claims have been viral online in recent months, alleging local authorities in Tangier are registering residents of Ksar El Kebir who are now hosted in Tangier after their evacuation from flood-affected areas.
The allegations claimed authorities have been asking the evacuees to report to local administrative offices as part of a so-called “administrative procedure.”
The Wilaya said such claims are completely unfounded, and that no such procedure has been implemented by the local authorities.
It also urged citizens to verify the accuracy of information before sharing. The Wilaya advised citizens to rely on official and reliable sources to avoid spreading false information that could confuse citizens.
Over 150,000 citizens have been evacuated from flood-hit areas in the past couple of weeks.
The process is part of Morocco’s efforts to mitigate the crisis caused by the floods amid heavy rainfall.
Moroccan authorities also pledged solidarity initiatives supporting people affected by the floods, with humanitarian aid and psychological assistance.
Civil society associations are implementing a series of initiatives for citizens who were temporarily evacuated after their homes were flooded by overflowing rivers in several neighborhoods, including in Tetouan.
