Fez — Organizers of the Fez Spiritual Marathon have officially announced the postponement of the event, which was scheduled on February 15, following recent floods in Morocco and continued weather-related risks.
In a statement addressed to runners, and also posted on all official social media pages, the organizing committee said the decision was taken “in solidarity with the affected communities and out of responsibility in light of the current conditions,” emphasizing that safety concerns made postponement necessary.
The announcement confirms that the marathon has been postponed, not canceled. A new date will be announced once it is officially confirmed.
“All registrations will remain valid for the new date,” the statement reads, adding that additional practical information will be communicated shortly.
Safety first amid weather concerns
The committee noted that the decision followed consultations with relevant stakeholders in response to ongoing weather instability. Organizers stressed that prioritizing the safety of participants, volunteers, and partners was essential under the current circumstances.
“We are fully aware of the investment, preparation, and commitment that a marathon represents,” the statement said, acknowledging that many runners had trained for months, with some aiming to qualify for a Marathon Major event.
The letter highlights that the marathon represents more than a race, describing it as a collective journey built through community effort.
Online frustration over timing
The postponement, however, has triggered backlash across social media platforms, where several runners expressed anger and disappointment over the last minute announcement. Some participants have publicly called for refunds, particularly noting that the past few days in Fez have been sunny, with forecasts showing no significant rainfall expected over the weekend.
Critics online also questioned the last minute timing of the decision, arguing that weather conditions appear stable and that many runners from abroad had already traveled or finalized logistical arrangements that could no longer be refunded.
Organizers have not yet addressed refund requests directly but reiterated in their statement that registrations will remain valid for the rescheduled date.
Commitment to a new edition
The statement, signed by Abderrahim Bourmdane, President of Association Dila Athlétique and head of the organizing committee, affirmed that work is already underway to ensure the rescheduled edition takes place under optimal conditions.
“Our priority remains the safety of participants, volunteers, and all stakeholders involved,” the committee wrote. “We are actively working with all partners to organize this new edition under the best possible conditions.”
Organizers concluded by thanking participants for their understanding, trust, and continued support.
“The Fez Spiritual Marathon is a collective journey. We will continue to build it together with you,” the statement said.
The postponement comes as parts of Morocco have faced significant rainfall and flooding in recent weeks, prompting precautionary measures across various public and sporting events.
Observers online speculate the new date will have to wait, as Ramadan is just around the corner, and organizing a marathon during fasting hours would not be practical. However, a revised official date for the Fez Spiritual Marathon is expected to be announced in the coming days.
