Rabat – After days of uncertainty and anguish, rescue teams in Tetouan have recovered the body of a mother who was swept away by violent floodwaters earlier this week, bringing painful clarity to a tragedy that has shaken northern Morocco.

Civil Protection authorities confirmed that the woman’s body was located on Thursday evening following an intensive search operation.

She had gone missing on Sunday night when sudden torrents overtook a family vehicle near Douar Lmouawja in the commune of Bni Harchen, Tetouan province.

With her recovery, the death toll rises to five: three children, their mother, and the driver of the car. One person, the father of the family, remains unaccounted for.

Since the accident, rescue teams combed riverbanks and surrounding terrain along provincial road No.4704, near the Rmilat river. Heavy rainfall had caused waters to surge without warning, sweeping the light vehicle away within moments.

The confirmation of the mother’s death has brought sorrow, but also an end to the uncertainty that weighed heavily on the family.

Civil Protection units remain deployed as efforts continue to locate the missing father.

Authorities face challenging conditions due to unstable ground and fluctuating water levels following the recent storms that hit several northern cities.

Local authorities have also opened a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

The tragedy has renewed calls for extreme caution on rural roads that cross valleys and seasonal waterways.
