Rabat – Azzedine Ounahi made a strong impact in his long-awaited return to Girona FC, helping his side earn a point in a 2–2 draw against Deportivo Alavés in La Liga yesterday.
The Moroccan midfielder, sidelined for several weeks due to a calf injury sustained at the 2025 AFCON, came off the bench in the second half and provided a key assist for Girona’s go-ahead goal as they battled back from an early deficit.
Ounahi’s return was confirmed by club boss Míchel Sánchez, who said ahead of the match that the midfielder was “ready to participate” and would add competition and creativity to the squad after recovering from injury.

Inspired return helps Girona fight back
They got off to a shaky start when Lucas Boyé found the net early, but they didn’t stay down for long. Vladyslav Vanat quickly leveled things up, and then Viktor Tsygankov put Girona in the driver’s seat, finishing off a pinpoint pass from Ounahi, who looked sharp in his return. It felt like it was a done deal for Girona, but Boyé popped up again late in the game to grab his second and force a 2–2 draw.
Even with that late equalizer, Girona’s performance proved just how much they’ve missed Azzedine Ounahi. The Moroccan international’s return was an immediate game-changer, injecting a creative spark and a much-needed sense of rhythm into the midfield. Finding gaps and pushing the attack forward is exactly what Girona needs right now as they fight to climb further away from the relegation zone.
The draw leaves Girona in 11th place in La Liga, a position they aim to solidify as they approach the final third of the season.
For Morocco’s national team, Ounahi’s regained fitness is equally significant. The midfielder’s recovery puts him in line for selection ahead of the upcoming March friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
