Rabat – OpenAI says it is expanding safeguards around mental health conversations on ChatGPT while also addressing a series of legal cases related to the technology in the US.
In an update on safety work, the company said more than 900 million people now use ChatGPT each week for everyday tasks such as learning new skills or navigating complex systems, including healthcare.
It said ongoing efforts to strengthen safety features remain a key part of delivering those benefits while supporting scientific research.
Among the updates is the upcoming introduction of a trusted contact feature that will allow adult users to designate someone who can receive notifications if the system detects that the user may need additional support. The feature is being developed in collaboration with experts from the company’s Council on Well Being and AI and its Global Physicians Network.

The company said it is also improving how its models detect and respond to signs of emotional distress. New evaluation methods are being developed to simulate extended conversations related to mental health, allowing researchers to better identify risks and refine how the system reacts in sensitive situations.
Separately, a California court recently coordinated several mental health-related lawsuits involving ChatGPT into a single legal proceeding. A coordination judge is expected to be assigned in the coming days, and attorneys representing plaintiffs have indicated that additional cases may be filed.
OpenAI said it will address the litigation with care and transparency while respecting the privacy of individuals involved. The company said it will continue to focus on understanding the facts and improving its technology while the court process unfolds.
It added that many of the cases involve complex circumstances and that court proceedings can take time as evidence is gathered and reviewed.
