Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced today that its sighting committees will observe the moon for Eid Al Fitr 2026 on Thursday.
The ministry informed its judges and delegates across the country that the observation of the crescent moon for Shawwal, marking the end of the holy month, will take place on the 29th day of Ramadan, corresponding to March 19.
If the delegates sight the moon on Thursday evening, this means Eid Al Fitr is on Friday. Otherwise, it will fall on Saturday, March 21.
The ministry called on its delegates to use the following numbers to report on the results of the observation: 0537-76-11-45; 0537-76-09-32; 0537-76-05-49.
Astronomers believe Eid Al Fitr is on Saturday, stressing that it will be nearly impossible to sight the moon on Thursday.
Astronomy centers believe the moon could only be seen with advanced tools.
Other countries are expecting Eid to fall on Friday, March 20.
Saudi Arabia and several other Gulf countries are observing the crescent moon for Eid Al Fitr on Wednesday. Astronomers believe Saudi Arabia will also complete a 30-day cycle. Therefore, Eid Al Fitr is likely on Friday in the Gulf country.
Morocco began fasting for Ramadan on February 19, a day after Saudi Arabia.
Many questioned Saudi Arabia’s results following their moon sighting for the holy month, arguing that the crescent was not visible.
