Rabat – Morocco is set to experience unstable weather conditions this week, with thunderstorms, possible hail, and strong winds expected across several regions, according to the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGSM).
The weather service issued an orange-level weather alert for Tuesday, warning of locally heavy thunderstorms bringing between 25 and 35 mm of rainfall. These storms may also include hail and are expected to affect provinces such as Figuig, Boulemane, Settat, Marrakech, Kelaat Sraghna, Rehamna, and Al Haouz from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The directorate also forecasts strong winds with speeds reaching between 75 and 80 km/h in northern areas, including Tetouan, Tangier-Asilah, and Fahs-Anjra, from midday until 6 p.m.
Meteorologists say these conditions are typical for spring, a season known for rapid and sometimes intense weather changes. The weather service links the current instability to an Atlantic low-pressure system positioned near Morocco’s coast. This system is bringing cold air into the upper atmosphere, which is interacting with warm, moist air coming from the south. This contrast is creating strong atmospheric instability, leading to the formation of active storm clouds capable of producing heavy rain, hail, and strong local winds.
Temperatures are expected to be relatively cold on Tuesday, especially in the Atlas Mountains, with thunderstorms affecting the High and Middle Atlas, Rehamna, the phosphate plateaus, Oulmes, and the eastern regions. Light rain is also possible in the southeast, the Rif, and northern parts of the southern provinces, with snowfall expected on mountain peaks.
The unstable conditions will continue into Wednesday, with more thunderstorms expected in the High and Anti-Atlas, Souss, the southeast, and Abda regions. Snowfall is likely to persist at higher elevations, along with a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly in the southeast.
By Thursday, the weather will remain unsettled, with thunderstorms forecast in the southeast, eastern regions, and the Atlas areas. Rain will be less intense in other regions, while snow and strong winds continue in some areas.
From Friday onward, unstable weather is expected to persist, especially in northern Morocco, with slightly cooler daytime temperatures and continued strong winds in several regions.
