Rabat – Amina Bouayach, President of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH), has received the International Award for Confronting the Political Abuse of Religion by BPUR International. The achievement recognizes her leadership in advancing human rights, equality, and fundamental freedoms both in Morocco and internationally.

Bouayach has long championed human dignity, democratic values, and inclusive societies grounded in respect for diversity and the rule of law. The award recognizes her efforts in actively confronting extremism, and defending civic spaces where freedom of belief and equal citizenship thrive.

Under her leadership, the CNDH has strengthened human rights protections, promoted equality before the law, and facilitated dialogue that fosters peaceful coexistence among Morocco’s diverse communities. She has also taken a leading role in global initiatives to prevent the political exploitation of religion.

Bouayach spearheaded the First International Conference on the Political Abuse of Religion, held in Rabat on May 10-11, 2022, which established the foundation for a global campaign advocating for the creation of an international treaty combating this issue.

In awarding Bouayach, BUR International highlighted that her leadership embodies the principles of the initiative: ensuring that religion remains a source of moral guidance and human dignity, rather than a mechanism for political manipulation.

In addition, Bouayach, who is also the president of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), received the Professional Merit Medal 2025 in recognition of her long-standing commitment to promoting and protecting human rights at both national and international levels. The medal honors outstanding contributions by academics, experts, and judges to the defense of human rights.

The recognitions affirm Morocco’s growing influence in international human rights discourse and reflect Bouayach’s role as a leading figure in promoting responsible governance, equality, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
