Former Libya international Tarik El Taib has supported the decision to strip the Senegal national football team of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

Reacting to the ruling, El Taib said the outcome was justified and in line with football regulations.

“The Senegal national team is the team that withdraws from matches the most. I believe this decision came at the right time so that everyone knows the meaning of the sports charter and sports laws. The trophy went to those who deserve it,” he said.

CAF ruling divides opinion

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that Senegal had forfeited the AFCON 2025 final, leading to Morocco being officially declared champions.

The decision has led to strong reactions across African football. While some figures have backed CAF’s interpretation of the rules, Senegal have rejected the outcome and taken the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Senegal’s federation continues to contest the ruling, maintaining that the team earned the title on the pitch. The players also recently displayed the trophy before a friendly match, showing they still consider themselves champions.

The case remains ongoing, but for now Morocco are recognized as the official winners, with debate continuing around one of the most disputed decisions in recent AFCON history.
