Agadir – Rachid Talbi El Alami, President of Morocco’s House of Representatives, is representing Morocco at the “One Health” International Summit in Lyon on Tuesday.

The Moroccan delegation includes Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, along with senior officials from her ministry and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, as well as Rajae Benchaji, Morocco’s Consul General in Lyon.

The high-level meeting was held on April 7, coinciding with World Health Day. It is hosted by the French government, convening heads of state and government, international organizations, scientists, and civil society.

The Summit emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal, plant and ecosystem health, and the need for coordinated, science-based approaches to address shared health threats.

The summit is a result of quadripartite partnership between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Health Organization (WHO), and World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

According to WHO, The One Health summit aims to foster international and interdisciplinary dialogue, promote cooperation and research programs, and rethink the global institutional framework to build a shared One Health culture.

It also seeks to mobilize both public and private actors to implement practical solutions that strengthen health and surveillance systems, preventing health, food, and environmental risks that affect populations worldwide.

In announcing the summit a few months back, President Emmanuel Macron said the event would be structured around several fundamental principles.

He cited the promotion of research, innovation, and a science-based approach, emphasizing a multilateral approach as the only way to implement this vision globally, in a coordinated and united manner, in the face of growing fragmentation

In addition to highlighting the central role of public-private partnerships, as all partners must engage and adopt the One Health approach, and ensuring the inclusive participation of civil society and youth, as the foundation of our collective action.
