Casablanca – Morocco has retained presidency of the African Council of Information Technology Agencies, known as CAITA, during its fourth meeting held on Wednesday in Marrakech on the sidelines of GITEX Africa Morocco 2026.

TheDigital Development Agency (ADD) organized the meeting as part of GITEX Africa’s edition. The event, taking place in Marrakech from April 7-9,  has increasingly positioned itself as a strategic platform for strengthening integrated and action-oriented digital cooperation across Africa.

CAITA, a consultative body of Smart Africa, brings together national agencies in charge of digital affairs and information technology to align strategies, share expertise, and develop coordinated responses to the continent’s digital challenges.

Opening the session, ADD Director General and acting CAITA president Amine El Mezouaghi said it was an “immense honor” to chair the fourth meeting in Morocco and reaffirm the country’s commitment to advancing the council’s missions and activities. He also commended the momentum created by Smart Africa and the engagement of participating African agencies.

The latest meeting continues work launched in June 2023, when Marrakech hosted CAITA’s first session during the inaugural GITEX Africa Morocco. The previous gathering brought together 15 national agencies and marked Morocco’s election, through the ADD, to the presidency of the council.

A second extraordinary online meeting later helped formalize CAITA’s operating procedures and adopt its 2024 action plan, while the third meeting held on May 29, 2024, in Marrakech deepened strategic cooperation and capacity-building efforts.

That trajectory expanded further in July 2025, when a Rabat meeting chaired by the ADD launched work on the first African guidelines for cross-border data exchange, reflecting a shared ambition for digital integration built on interoperability and trust.

During Wednesday’s session, the ADD presented a dedicated 2026–2027 action roadmap aimed at accelerating major structuring projects, strengthening cooperation mechanisms among member agencies, and consolidating a coordinated, inclusive, and results-driven African digital governance model.

Council members also hailed the progress made under Morocco’s presidency and formally decided to renew the country’s mandate, through the ADD, at the head of CAITA, reflecting continued confidence in Morocco’s leadership in steering this continental digital agenda.
