Rabat – Alexandria, in the U.S. state of Virginia, is set to host a landmark edition of Morocco Day on June 5, 2026, marking the 10th anniversary of the event and commemorating 250 years of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the United States.

Organized by the Moroccan American Network, the celebration highlights the historic ties dating back to 1777, when Morocco became the first nation to recognize the independence of the United States. The anniversary also recalls the 1786 Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship, considered the longest uninterrupted treaty in US history.

The 2026 edition will be held under the theme “Engineering the Future of Entrepreneurship,” bringing together entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and business leaders from Morocco, the United States and across Africa. The event aims to strengthen economic cooperation and create new cross-border investment opportunities.

A central feature of this year’s program is the introduction of “Digital Fast Track” sessions, designed to accelerate investment in emerging Moroccan regions such as Zagora and Dakhla. The initiative will also focus on expanding collaboration in technology, media, and innovation-driven sectors.

Beyond its economic dimension, Morocco Day 2026 will emphasize cultural and diplomatic heritage. The event will pay tribute to historical figures and symbols of Moroccan-American friendship, including Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah and the American Legation in Tangier, a longstanding emblem of bilateral ties.

The program is structured around two main pillars: cultural continuity, aimed at strengthening identity and engagement among the Moroccan diaspora, particularly younger generations; and digital diplomacy, which seeks to use modern communication tools to deepen economic and institutional links between Rabat and Washington.

The project was initiated by Mohamed Hajjam, whose strategic vision helped bring the initiative to life. Launched in 2014, Morocco Day experienced a challenging beginning, marked by uncertainty and administrative rejections in certain circles.

Despite the lack of initial support, Hajjam chose to personally invest hundreds of thousands of dollars through his company to develop the concept, visual identity, and organizational structure of the project. He later described the early setbacks as a factor that ultimately strengthened the initiative and gave it greater stability.

Today, the event has gained official recognition through proclamations issued by public officials and U.S. mayors, affirming how grassroots diplomacy led by civil society can, at times, build more lasting bridges than traditional institutional approaches.

Over the past decade, Morocco Day has grown into a major platform connecting US cities such as Washington, Miami, and Los Angeles with Morocco’s economic ecosystem. The 2026 edition is expected to further reinforce that bridge, positioning the event as a hub for innovation, investment, and long-term cooperation between the two countries.
