Tetouan – Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is engaged in discussions with the U.S. Department of Defense over a potential agreement that would allow the Pentagon to deploy its Gemini artificial intelligence models within classified environments.

The proposed arrangement would enable the Pentagon to access and use Google’s AI tools across a range of authorized applications.

While details of the potential deployment remain limited, the talks reflect a broader effort by the U.S. government to integrate advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into its operations.

As part of the negotiations, Google has reportedly suggested incorporating specific safeguards into any future contract.

These provisions would restrict the use of its AI technologies in areas such as domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons systems operating without appropriate human oversight.

The measures are intended to address ongoing ethical concerns surrounding the military use of artificial intelligence.

A Pentagon official, when asked about the discussions, did not confirm any direct talks with Google.

However, the official stated that the department will continue to expand the deployment of advanced AI capabilities through strong partnerships with industry leaders at multiple levels.

For Google, securing a deal with the Pentagon would mark a significant step in strengthening its ties with U.S. government institutions. Like several of its competitors, the company has been increasing its focus on public sector contracts, particularly as federal agencies accelerate efforts to adopt AI technologies to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and streamline administrative processes.

The potential agreement comes at a time when artificial intelligence is becoming a central component of national defense strategies. Governments are seeking to leverage AI not only for data analysis and logistics but also for decision-making support in complex and time-sensitive scenarios. This growing reliance has intensified competition among major technology firms to secure strategic government partnerships.

The discussions also take place against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny over the role of private technology companies in defense-related projects.

In recent years, collaborations between Silicon Valley firms and military institutions have sparked internal debates and public criticism, particularly around issues of transparency, accountability, and ethical use.

Separately, recent remarks attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated a proposal to rename the Department of Defense as the “Department of War.”

Such a change would require approval from Congress and has not been formally adopted.

While no agreement has been finalized, the ongoing talks between Google and the Pentagon highlight the increasing convergence between the technology sector and national security priorities, as artificial intelligence continues to reshape the landscape of modern governance and defense.
