Casablanca – UK Vice Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy pointed to steady progress in the growing strategic partnership with Morocco, describing it as strengthened across key areas of cooperation.

His remarks followed  the UK’s reaffirmation of support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Western Sahara after talks in London between Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Thursday. The UK has reaffirmed its support of Morocco’s autonomy initaitve as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic foundation for resolving the Sahara dispute.

Speaking after his own meeting with Bourita, Lammy said cooperation between the two countries continues to advance nearly a year on, particularly in areas linked to growth and security. He described the partnership as part of a “new era” in bilateral relations, pointing to expanding collaboration across key sectors including defense, energy, maritime cooperation, food security, water management and health, as well as efforts to support regional stability.

Relations between Rabat and London, which date back more than 800 years, are now being reshaped around shared priorities. Recent months ihave seen this momentum translate into more concrete coordination, particularly around investment and infrastructure linked to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with British companies engaging in discussions on stadium development, transport networks, and urban planning, alongside interest from UK financial institutions in funding major projects.

Cooperation has also deepened in renewable energy through ongoing exchanges on solar and wind projects, while talks have expanded in maritime security and port logistics to support trade flows. At the same time, a series of business forums and trade missions this year have aimed to boost investment, with both sides pointing to opportunities in water management, agriculture resilience, and health systems as part of their evolving post-Brexit partnership.

Cooper also welcomed what she called the strength of bilateral relations, saying the partnership delivers real value for both countries, especially as they explore new areas of cooperation tied to major international events and long-term development plans.
