Fez – OpenAI has launched a new model, GPT-5.5, describing it as its most advanced system yet for research and complex task execution and positioning it as a step toward more autonomous forms of artificial intelligence.

According to converging reports, the company said the new model introduces a new class of “agentic” AI, designed to handle multi-step and unclear tasks with limited human guidance.

Instead of requiring detailed instructions, GPT-5.5 can plan workflows, use digital tools, verify its own results, and adapt when facing uncertainty.

The company highlighted improvements in areas such as agent-based coding, computer-driven tasks, knowledge work, and early-stage scientific research.

These upgrades suggest a broader ambition to move beyond simple question-and-answer systems toward tools that can actively carry out complex assignments.

Speaking to reporters, Greg Brockman said the model’s key strength lies in its ability to do more with less direction.

He noted that GPT-5.5 can assess vague problems and determine the next steps on its own, calling it a foundation for how people may interact with computers in the future.

Mark Chen, the company’s chief research officer, added that the near-term goal is to position humans as coordinators, while AI systems take on more of the execution work.

GPT-5.5 delivers a significant increase in intelligence without slowing down performance.

While more powerful models often come with delays, GPT-5.5 reportedly maintains response speeds similar to its predecessor while offering stronger reasoning and task-handling capabilities.

The release also reflects a broader industry push toward advanced AI systems that can approach general intelligence.

OpenAI said tools capable of conducting research and improving their own processes represent tangible progress in that direction.

Company executives described GPT-5.5 as one of the clearest steps so far toward systems that could accelerate AI research itself.

The model will be rolled out to users across Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers within ChatGPT and Codex, with a more advanced GPT-5.5 Pro version reserved for higher-tier subscribers.

OpenAI said the model will launch with its strongest safety measures to date, aiming to limit misuse while maintaining broad access for practical applications.
