Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has warned of locally heavy thunderstorms on Tuesday, with rainfall expected between 30 and 40 mm in several parts of the country.
The orange-level weather alert warns that strong winds and possible hail will accompany the storms. The affected areas include Chefchaouen, Ouazzane, Al Hoceima, Tetouan, Guercif, Driouch, El Hajeb, Taza, Taounate, Meknes, Boulemane, Moulay Yacoub, Fez, Sefrou, Ifrane, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Khemisset, and Khenifra.
The alert runs from 1 pm until 10 pm on Tuesday.
Morocco’s weather has shifted from stable, sunny spring conditions to more unstable patterns in recent weeks. Periods of warm temperatures have been followed by sudden winds, rainfall, and occasional storms. This kind of variability is typical during spring, when changing air masses can quickly alter weather conditions across different regions.
Some parts of the country have already experienced unstable weather on Monday evening, including unusually large hailstones in certain rural areas of El Kelaat Sraghna province. Houcine Youabed, head of communication at the meteorological authority, attributed the situation to the formation of unstable cumulonimbus clouds.
He explained to SNRT News that these clouds developed significantly over the High Atlas Mountains and nearby plains. Infrared satellite images showed that the tops of these clouds reached high levels in the atmosphere, where temperatures are very low. This explains the intense thunderstorms, strong downdrafts, and large hail observed in some areas.
Youabed added that such weather is typical in spring, when warm and humid air collides with colder upper layers, which creates powerful storm clouds.
