Violence linked to football unrest once again returned to Casablanca after dangerous clashes broke out in Moulay Rachid neighborhood, involving individuals believed to be associated with local ultras groups, in scenes that quickly spread across social media and sparked wide reactions online.
Police arrested three suspects aged between 19 and 24 during the early hours of Sunday morning, following violent confrontations involving bladed weapons and fireworks.
Videos circulating online showed scenes of chaos inside the neighborhood, with residents reportedly living moments of panic as groups of young men exchanged violence in what many described as “street war” scenes.
Security forces later intervened quickly to restore order, while investigations remain ongoing in order to identify the remaining individuals involved in the clashes.
Although the incident was quickly linked to football hooliganism, several voices believe the issue goes far beyond the game itself.
Sports analyst Hicham Ramram rejected reducing the situation to football alone, insisting that the repeated incidents in the same neighborhood point toward wider social problems rather than the sport itself.
The incident once again reopened discussions around violence linked to football culture in Morocco, especially with the country preparing to host major international events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Calls for stricter action against ultras have grown in recent years, but the debate remains divided between those who support tougher restrictions and others who argue that banning fan culture could punish peaceful supporters while failing to address the roots of the problem.
